Hello all who read this :

just wanting to find out about midi keyboards and what everyone uses? i don't have a heap of room so was thinking along the lines of the Axiom 25 by m-audio or the Oxygen 49 depending on whether it will be more beneficial to have 49 keys??

any help would be handy!

Auzwa thanks for raising this topic, as I'm looking around for one myself.

And Mike! Thanks for your comment, the MPK49 looks like a very nice machine - 76 assignable controls and 46 keys as opposed to the 61 (which is too many)!

Awesome... Allans are selling it for $750 - "they giving me good price"?

What about the Axiom 49, or the Edirol PCR-50 (which doesn't have drum pads but looks like a good unit just the same)? These two are more in my price range, that's all...

Have a look at the Microkontrol from Korg is an excellent space saving option. MPC style pads, throw levers and assignable encoders. It's a workhorse.

http://www.korg.com/Product.aspx?pd=511

I wouldn't worry about getting anything larger as far as octave range unless your a keyboardist and planning on playing live as in the studio you will likely get by just fine limiting yourself.

Yeah I know and in 2009

Yeah I know and in 2009 quality products will still last longer than those with an inferior build quality. If the microkontrol is such ass paper then why are guys like Sebastien Leger still using them as their primary keyboard and control surface? I'll answer that for you, cause they'll last longer. The Akai is hardly likely to be so much better cause its newer?

Yeah I understand what its

Yeah I understand what its based on and I'm not taking anything away from what it offers but for me in a space challenged studio the Korg offers almost identical functionality an octaves less keys and in my opinion a higher build quality. The layout is more functional with the MPC pads upfront rather than behind the keys. And while it's based on the MPC5000 it still does not make it an MPC5000. I didn't say the Akai was pants but for my money I know what I would invest in should I need too. Im more than happy with my current rig. Are you saying there is something inherently wrong with Korg products? Come on bro! Just offering another option for the guy to consider.

I can feel a "Behringer Vs The World" discussion (or something similar) coming on...

(Ryan if you feel this comment isn't worthy of 2 coin, I won't argue against it's deduction from my 'kitty')

There is no comparison that

There is no comparison that can be made between Akai/Korg and Behringer. I would not class either Akai or Korg as two dynamic opposites I just think the Korg has it tipped in this situation. Mike's opinion swings the other way and I respect that but his argument so far has not convinced me.

I am currently in the process of getting one myself Smiling

Both the above you mentioned are tidy units, had a look and a play on a novation x station, it is a synth/midi controller/audio interface all rolled into 1
http://www.novationmusic.com/products/x_station?option=2

Also had a look at the akai mpk49 and it is an awesome little piece of gear!!!

On the key note I think the 49 key controllers are better value as far as I can tell it is only with the 49 key models and above on most makes do you get the slider type volume controllers...

Another point worth noting is that depending on whether you already have an audio interface or not?? If not it is cheaper to get a unit with one built in then its just usb into your computer and plug your monitors straight into the built in audio interface and BOOM!!!

Im no expert but have been researching this topic so hope it helps Smiling

There are so many out there

There are so many out there that it can become confusing. I ended up with the behringer UMX25 (also come in 49 key) because I was on a budget. It seems OK for what I use it for... basically I only use it as a trigger for Reason. Horses for courses though. If you are going to be using it a lot and for high end stuff, then go for the higher end gear. Basically when it comes to this type of gear you get what you pay for.

I've been using the Behringer UMX25 as well mate - good keyboard for when you're on the go Smiling I've found it was all I needed for my particular application, although I would prefer it to have more faders (I bought a Behringer Fader Controller to counter that - go the Behringer!!) and possibly a bit more octave range... but 2 octaves is a good size if you're dragging it along with you to your sets! I've used a couple different midi controllers since I started producing, and personally I've found that Behringers range pretty practical and affordable too Smiling

If your budget allows for a bigger purchase, then I would have to recommend the Novation midi controllers - I've done a bit of research into these sexy little beasts and they seem to be worth every penny Smiling If you've got some spare coin, go for the Novation X-Station 25... it's my "dream" synth/midi controller haha number 1 on my to-buy-production-wishlist!
