Ok I'm gonna chip in to get a discussion going...

I was thinking about creating competitions on the site were we set up a monthly comp. with a theme for for mixes or composing tracks.

For mixes, we could set a genre or theme eg. (haunted, Christmas, stalked, flirty, cheesy or include a certain song etc.) and a time limit of say 20 or 30 mins. Post mixes to the comp. and then vote on them. Winner gets some coin or something cool.

For track comps. we could put together a sample pack and entrants would create a tune using the sample pack.

Is that a start?

Sample pack competitions are always fun Ryan Smiling How much coin are we talking here??
How about a comp that incorporates that and possibly if you could work it out a guest set at a east coast club?? Smiling Count me in either way I'm up for it feeling ultra-creative at the moment.

Yeah love the themed idea.

Yeah love the themed idea. Think maybe you could do one for a mix, one for a Remix, one for an original and one for a mash-up or rotate the format. Monthly is a real incentive to get creative. Already got ideas for the "cheesy" month remix.........oh yeeeeah!

Yep, that's a start

Yep, that's a start alright.

I like the thought of themed mixes and definitely think that offering sample packs for re-mix / production comps is cool too.

Further to the mandatory song used in a mix idea, I think it could be cool if you did a similar thing with just samples. Y'know, something like provide a few samples (be they spoken word, singing vocals, or just identifiable noises), and have people include them in their mixes. Best, most creative use wins! You should also have people include what equipment they're using to record their mix, as that could also be a good indication of how creative they've been (ie: loaded it all up on a computer program vs. using vinyl and a looper only.... that sort of thing)

I'm reminded of a story I read about a club (I think it was in the UK somewhere) where the owners felt that the DJ scene was taking itself a bit too seriously, and so they started to encourage the punters to bring in records and give them to the DJ on the night. The challenge for the DJ was then to work that record into their mix somewhere along the line (as a sign of their actual mixing ability and creativity). There was some sort of reward for the punter who could essentially stump the DJ by bringing a record that couldn't be effectively mixed in. Hence, the records offered up became more and more obscure, and the challenge for the DJ's even harder. The crowd was the judge and jury and so were even more into the night, and it apparently really sorted the DJ's who were really creative and talented from the wannabes.

So, that sort of idea for a mixing comp could really provide a challenge for us, and be something a little different from norm. Food for thought.

Cheers

I've seen some comps. that ask you submit a 10min mix to YouTube. I suppose that's one way to verify skillz.. Mixing up the themes and rules for each comp. will make it interesting.

I'll work on some functionality.... Cool

I suppose if the competitions were held once a year, the coin payoff would need to be huge. But I was thinking of one comp. a month would be a good start and the prize should give you enough coin for three uploads or so. Will that help ya sleep easy? hehe Smiling Don't forget about the glory. You'd be the pin-up boy in the monthly newsletter. Cool

I could also donate a gift certificate for beatport for special comps. ... just a thought.

i like the idea of a production comp, but there would need to be a separate place to upload... maybe tickin a box on the u/l page that says "u/l as entry to comp" or something. And there would need to be a mix comp AND a single/remix comp. I don't know if the theme would work unless a sample pack (say 10 or so wav/aif files, some of which are just samples others are loops.... kind of like an "acid 8pak" (acidplanet.com... one of the best things to happen to sony acid. Must see for anyone wanting to start production)) But yeah just like 10-15 samples (stabs, fills, vocals and/or loops). My 2c.

i reckon its a great idea it will make people put their thinking caps on and get creative with the particular theme chosen, there are so many genre's of dance music it wont be hard to come up with different themes each month, it may may even make a lot of people dust of some of their older tunes instead of all new stuff. One question how much coin will it cost to upload ?

There should be time

There should be time restrictions on the competitions involving mixes (as in 30 mins, or 45 maybe) as it may take a lot of time to listen to all submissions and you would not like a potential winner to pass you by if your expected to vote on them. Not always of course but just think boundaries are good to begin with. You can push 'em after. Also can it be stated from the outset the rules of engagement when it comes to each mixing competition as to whether its a vinyl only competition, a software inclusive comp, or a combination event because I just know its going to turn into one fucking tiresome boring debate if its not clear from the outset.

Maybe Ryan could elect certain genre aficionado's to judge said genre entry's on occasion rather than it being an open vote.

um putting *sarcasm* at the end is the usual way i think.... sarcasm will NEVER work in text tho. Another way to show is by putting a smiley like Sticking out tongue or :| on the end (probs the latter cos its a kinda sarcastic face Smiling) but ye... there are some things that work better face to face/in speech.

Yeah the whole notion of sarcasm though relies on it's immediacy, and by writing *sarcasm* after something defeats that. To write it at the start of the statement would be better but again kind of defeats it. Thats why I think a common visual text depiction would be best as. as soon as you see it your mind switches into reading in a smarmy condescending voice that you recognize as being sarcastic.

Have been a little absent

Have been a little absent from the site for the last few days. Been to ol' Sydney town staying with my man and attended Trance Energy. Checked in to the site occasionally on my man's computer but he does not have speakers on his so couldn't listen to stuff down at his place and comment. Darn! But home now and back on deck.

Love the idea of competitions!! But what about little ol' fans like me? I do get the pleasure of listening to music on this site and I do get to give all my hard earned coin away to whoever asks but there really should be a comp for us too! After all, if you guys didn't have fans buying and listening to all your lovely music there wouldn't be any point in making it! Although one could always argue that you just do it for the love of it. So for fans I suggest best picture gallery, or maybe an artwork comp or best comment by a fan as voted by the DJ's on the site. Or maybe let the fans suggest a theme? Or the song that must be included in the mix. Just a thought Ryan. Thanks. Smiling

Format Shouldn't be a problem at all, ever!

and this is why, take a fully programmed perfectly mastered album like Ferry Corsten's Twice in a Blue moon. Got rave reveiws everyone luved it, including myself and i paid like 20 something for it from memory.

Then look at soulwax's hang all dj's

one hour full of shithouse mixing BUT they cramed 40+ trax!!!! i paid $3 for that cd and guess which one gets more plays in my car?

thats right the one with all the mstakes, because it has more damn energy. Everything is short and choppy and u can hear them djing as opposed to play beatmatch fade repeat, which has its place but comps are about being fresh which is why a programmed set will never flow in the way an ad-lib dj set will.

my 2c, oooo and there's 2 more coin!

some silly ideas for

some silly ideas for production comps

- maybe one sample 1/2s or so long of white noise, and everything has to be made out of that one sample. Most creative wins! (you'd be amazed at what some people can do , even by accident)

- producing things way outside the comfort zone, i.e. a techno producer making something broken/slower/faster (hiphop/ breaks / dnb) and vice versa or something... the idea here is to see who can cross over the best.

- Get spastically inebriated and make choons! most coherent tune wins! could work for mixing too. people under 0.15 % need not apply. proof by way of photographing a breathalyzer / puddle of chuck with your setup in the background

Hey ryan,
I've just thought of an idea for the first Undiscovered DJ comp:
1. 50 coin entry
2. 4 track mix
3. All Tracks used have to be downloaded and sourced from Undiscovered (to help further promote all the remixes and new tracks which DJ's/Producers have posted on Undiscovered)

Perhaps the Comp Mixes can be posted on the homepage above the Latest Mixes section for maximum exposure??

This is just an idea for the inaugural comp - as I realise this doesn't cater for pure vinyl djs - but as I am realising there are less and less records actually being produced to play...

Prize = Download credit from Beatport, DJ Downloads, etc..??

The ODM pixel is manufactured from plastic and attributes a rectangular dial with red watch that seems as though they're sitting around the floor. Quite great, instead of as well expensive possibly. There are many copies obtainable from the black market place in the event you know exactly where to search, however the top quality may well differ.
