Hey people, just wondering where you get your music from?
i have gotten a couple off beatport, but more wondering where i can get like chart toppers and that sort of stuff, atm also i just use ministry cds.
Its only for me and mates to play around with at our partys, i seached everywhere for them but im not too good at that stuff.
Im also talking about aussie charts or uk charts, they seem to be same.

I'd have to agree, a lot of people like www.beatport.com but personally i like www.traxsource.com much better. you could also use www.stompy.com
if you want vinyl (you can also buy CD's or download some digital copies) you cant go past www.juno.co.uk or try ebay for specific title that may be a bit older or more obscure.
just a quick question marksy, how are you mixing the ministry CD's? are they now sold with unmixed CD's as well?
you can also buy unmixed CD's from CD shops or order then online. i just got some from www.amazon.com and it was cheap, quick and easy.

You can't browse by category, date etc (not that i have seen anyway) .. only artist/label. In my opinion they are expensive compared to the rest.
I use beatport.com, playittonight.com and stompy.com although stompy takes a bit of time wading through the crap to get to the little gems.
playittonight has a good player and the sound samples are the clearest .. though the range is more limited than say beatport.

i like free stuff just like the rest of us but if we dont support the artists by buying music we are all gonna be playin shit music sooner or later
i think if you like something you get from soulseek you should go somewhere and pay for it
especially if you play it in public

... and if you're a DJ playing illegal mp3's,,, well, you know... Not Legal.
If I hear an artist I dig, I will make it a point to go to their shows. If they are an signed to an indie label, or a small label, then I will most definitely purchase their works from that source. Big music corps (Sony, BMG, etc...) don't give their artists much from the CD/LP profits (10%, +/- 5%), so for those cats, instead giving my money to fund the corporate machine, I'll just go see their shows. Thats how they make the majority of their funds.

I agree with Eddie, maybe even a little more serious about piracy. I think we should all buy the tracks and support the artists that put their heart and soul into their production, no matter how big or small the label. If the artist chooses to get ripped off by a big company then its their decision, no need for us to rip them off even more.
Plus them shitty file sharers are so unreliable and its really hard to find a decent quality song. I'd rather pay $2 and get a great quality track at a fast download rate.
And sites to download have the full scale of most catalogues, really new and really old and obscure, so you can pretty much find what every you want everytime.
Another thing, if your going to see a house music producers show and their DJing, they get paid the same amount no matter how many people go so its not really supporting them financially by showing up to their show.

Ok thanks, yeah i have a small collection of tracks from over the years, heaps of different styles. Will look at the websites you have all posted. Thanks.
Someone metioned mixing ministry cds, i just use the already mixed ones like sessions 1 and 2 etc, just look the intro, they are good for practicing which has helped me alot and its easy for me to show mates how to get a basic mix happening.
I will do a little mix up this weekend and try and upload it as well.
thanks again

when i first started i was like you and collected tracks i like from a range of genres, which makes it hard because you want to structure a set and make it flow but with so many different styles it is really hard. it was like i only hard 3 to 5 good tracks but from a range of genres so i decided to invest my time and money into 1 genre and as a result, have collected a load of great tracks and can make a range of mixes and play for hours. thats what you may have to do, focus on 1 genre for a while until you develop a collection.
its also really hard to mix mixed cds, they turn out to be really short and uninteresting mixes, best bet is to buy the full club mix. this will improve your mixing, creativity and interest in your set. good luck with it!

I collect from about two or three genres. I find it hard to stick to only one though. Maybe it's cause I'm a moody bastard
When I first started, I tried to stick to a single genre, I didn't really feel comfortable until I gave a few other styles a go to see what felt most natural.

I was the same deep8, I had a love of pumping hard techno(which i still enjoy) but started to buy some records that were on sale at the time(house and breaks).I ended up with a mish mash off styles but i found ways to thread them together eg start out with some house mix into some breaks which then made it easy to jump into the tekkers.
Now that Beatport and the like are around I can explore all the sounds I like without breaking the bank by shelling out for vinyl.
Im glad ive still got some of those old house tracks around because ive got a gig on sunday arvo that they will suit well.

I agree so much. I am not talking about any of you, but seeing these post's make me think about the fact that I don't understand how some dj's I know limit themselves to 1 genre. I talk to guys at the shop that say , i'm a tech dj, techno dj , trance dj, progressive dj, etc. What would Larry Levan have sounded like if he just played r&b all night? What would a Danny howells set sound like without a pop remix here and there? Every genre has it's junk and its quality. It's up to us as dj's to find and recognize the quality in the genres we like. I will never limit myself to 1 genre thats like eating chiken every day. I tend to play tribal, techno, latin tribal, progressive , heavy tech and straight house. At my current friday night gig in jersey i even play a good amount of pop remixes because it's easy to lose a suburban crowd if you don't keep them some what in the loop. I try to play 1 {pop remix] every 3 to 4 tracks. The big hit this week was friscia and lamboy's remix of say it right by nelly furtado. lol -- When i play in Ny you might here 1 or 2 a nite. Maybe 1 of you guys could also open my mind up to electro. I just can't seem to find 1 track i like. I think some dj's stay in the same genre all the time because its easier to mix that way. when you enjoy alot of diff genres you have to think about when and where and how you will bridge the set from 1 genre to the next as well as feel out how long you will play each 1. If your really good you can just jump track to track. I have rambled long enough. I just think we should not limit are sound as artists. Feel free 2 let me know if i need some cheese with my WHINE.

larry levan isnt around man and if he was im sure he would be playing everything, but thats not me. it works both ways though, what if jay j came on and played hard house, or even a breaks track? i would spew and demand a refund. i think dj's should play fairly consistent styles of music. i can listen to SOME different music (E.g. Baax's latest mix) and enjoy it for a change, but that doesnt mean im going to go and buy tracks off that mix, because thats not my style. i like to construct consistent sets that flow rather than just throwing on tracks that are going to get claps.
there is so much good music in such a narrow genre of soulful house, that i couldnt get through if i spent every waking hour dedicated to it. then you add all of these other genres and your only scratching the surface of each. id rather get deep into a genre and know as much about it as i can, find the good tracks, discover the artists, labels, remixes, etc. that work and are killers.
im not a jukebox, i dont play music to please people, i play music that i love. if im offered a gig to play R&B or tech house then i wont take it, because i am not going to enjoy it and the people there arent going to enjoy my interpretation of the genre. this has happened to me in the past. i was payed good money, but i was being asked to play britney spears all night. what a shit night. so now i just turn down them gigs, no matter how much you are offered.
you guy plays a much deeper, darker, techier style of music. it sounds good and gives it a change if you add something different in the mix. im playing more soulful, laid back house and it doesnt lend itself well to other genres. id rather create a vib around that sound, i think thats much more harder because you have research and dig deep into the genre to have enough good music to keep that vibe alive.

And i see your point. I dont play anything i don't love either. Tony humphries, Francios Kevorkian , Joe claussell , and Danny krivit are some of the best deep house dj's EVER. They played deep house with soul , percussion, electronica, and latin influences as well. That is really what I wanted to say. SOME guys stay in the same genre and every track sounds the same. I guess i'm just lucky to REALLY appreciate alot of diff styles. I don't spin deep house but i do enjoy it alot. I spent many a sunday afternoon at the infamous BODY and SOUL party sundays at vinyl NYC. Kevorkian , Claussell , and krivit were amazing + other dj's would just show up and play with them.
