DJ Geisha

Bio written by Kat Loughrey

He’s not a traditional Japanese female entertainer, he’s not even Japanese, DJ Geisha is however an artist - a superb all-round DJ, who sticks to the long-established DJing approach of professionalism, perfection, and a real devotion to quality dance music tunes.

Years of experience both here and overseas have transformed DJ Geisha into a proficient DJ, artist and producer. Although his love of House music always shines through, DJ Geisha is known to mix up a variety of now and then House, Electro, Breaks, Progressive, Hip Hop, Funk, or basically whatever takes his, and the crowds, fancy, at the time. Citing DJs such as Todd Terry, Sasha & Digweed, Mixmaster Mike, Carl Cox and Eric Powell as influences, DJ Geisha seeks to create his own sound wherever he goes, a sound that is truly and unmistakably his own.

Growing up between the UK, Hong Kong and Sydney, DJ Geisha, aka Luke Fowler, started his career out at the mere age of 17, putting on his own nights in Hong Kong. Luke’s first big gigs came from his involvement with the infamous Recreational Arts Team in Sydney in the late 80's. The team lead by Jac Vidgeon, Billy Yip, and Akira Isogawa (now an internationally recognised designer), staged massive parties that entertained between 5,000 and 20,000 punters and were instrumental in Australia's introduction to the rave scene. Highlights of this time for Luke included playing alongside Grace Jones at Sydney’s NYE ’88, Boy George & The EZ Posse at the Benetton “Colours” Australian launch and later with powerful vocalist Adeva in the 90s. He also produced the soundtracks for the legendary Garland & Garland hair shows in the early 90's in Sydney, and played in various clubs across the globe such as The Big Apple (where he shared a residency with well-known UK DJ Lee Burridge), Neptune II, Nation 97 and Propaganda in Hong Kong; Club Gold in Tokyo; Taurus in Thailand; JJs in Hong Kong and Shanghai, Ziggurat & Site in Sydney; plus a raft of appearances in clubs across Europe and Asia.

In 2001, Luke headed back to Australia to pursue his studies in Philosophy in central N.S.W and take a much needed hiatus from DJing. However after joining the on-campus radio station, it all went Pete Tong again, as Luke become one of a key group who changed the way the University saw dance music! With his residency at a local on-campus venue, Luke with his manager Leroy also promoted various events and enticed some big name DJs such as Krafty Kuts to grace the campus for a huge Uni-organised event. Never sitting still, Luke also travelled to various coastal hot-spots to DJ such as Byron Bay (at La La Land), and also worked on remixing and music production with a trip hop act called "30 Odd Meg of Ram". All this while by day he got to work on his PhD. Yes, that's right, he'll also be soon known as Dr. Luke!

In over ten years, Luke has played alongside such celebrated dance acts, DJs and artists such as Public Enemy, Lee Scratch Perry, Bobby Brown in Hong Kong; Graeme Park, Mike Pickering, Brandon Block, Carl Cox, Sasha & Digweed in London/Europe; and The Freestylers, Super Style Deluxe, TV Rock, Krafty Kuts, Freeform Five, Mark Dynamix, Endorphin, Pee Wee Ferris, and Jonathan Wall in Sydney. The skill and knowledge gained through these experiences is indescribable.

2007 has brought Luke to Melbourne in search of urban mayhem, bigger gigs, and new delights. Since arriving he has already played on the Traction stage at the 2007 Grand Prix alongside local artists such as Nathan G, Hook and Sling, Seany B and Sneaky Sound System. Recently, Luke has appeared at parties such as Intermission at Hardware's 6th Birthday and The Clarity.

Luke is here to conquer Melbourne – to find a scene where he can express himself fully, letting loose on the decks without limitations, standing by with his belief that tracks should suit the mood, not some “strict music policy”. Using a laptop, final scratch and decks, plus his own remixes, bootlegs and mash-ups, DJ Geisha is one determined DJ who is not here to mess about. He is here to make us fall in love with good music out there on the dance floor. Melbourne beware- DJ Geisha is truly one to watch.

favourite artists & labels

I could be here all night. I tend to avoid being to constrained by artists and genres, preferring to let the music speak for itself when I am sourcing tunes.

Final Scratch run on a Mac Book, 2 Technics 1200's, and an old Pioneer DJM 500.

I play around with Ableton Live from time to time and I am currently without a keyboard (a situation I plan to rectify sooner rather than later)
