Hi all...

This mix was a real pleasure to perform. For my good friend Lisa's birthday, mixed and recorded live for her, this is essentially a Progressive House set with elements I know she enjoys in electronic music (rise, breakdowns, piano samples, short synths, organic instruments and creepy undertones).

Hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed mixing it guys (and as much as she enjoyed it being played).

fuckin right on.. I said nice one bruvva!!!
Love all of it - I know you like your techno stuff, but this for me is your defining sound - sweet luscious prog - a follow up from your Mixed feelings sets
Classic stuff, especially Sayes, Lexicon Avenue, John Ciafone = can certainly see Satoshi's influence here!
Sonique was a nice touch too, which lead into some sweeter trancier prog, loved the Micah finish - totally "e"ing off my head!..
Very enjoyable sir!

Wow... thanks a lot for the kind words/props J-C, much appreciated! Comments like those from you are always very humbling.

If I was to mix what I enjoy playing the most, admittedly it would be this style of EDM. I really do love the progressive structure and what you can do within the space of about 2 hours...

I've been a fan of Lexicon Avenue for some time now... love their "slow-build" style and punchy, uplifting beats. The Sayes track I loved the minute I heard it, only last month... What did you think of the Matteo Marini track ("Terra Sarda")? For me, that's a standout in this compilation....

Thanks again for listening mate - made my day. Smiling

Yeah lurve Lexicon Avenue,

Yeah lurve Lexicon Avenue, been following them for about 10 years now too... the "whisps" and "growls" which they seem to incorporate into their remixes just seem to add that certain drive, plus their punchy kicks provide that peaky vibe which is so enjoyable - Quality UK Production crew

Terra Sarda, yeah wasn't quite in the same zone, perhaps a little too like a Mark Knight production for my liking (ie: I prefer a Mark Knight production), not sure of the melodic sweep either - but that's just my opinion... Really dropped it down a notch after Lexicon Avenue too... (which was ok)

A bit disappointed you don't

A bit disappointed you don't feel the same way about Terra Sarda that I did... however, such a melodic, organic sweep isn't everyone's bag - I get that.

You prefer a Mark Knight production?? You sure?? He was always a little too borderline electro/commercial for me. Much prefer a deep house or uplifting progressive style to his stuff. Maybe I haven't heard enough of his...

Cheers again for the comments mate.. this mix has already dropped off the Recent 5 so I'm hoping I get a few more...? Puzzled

Hey Luke,
Am a fan of melodic, organic sweeps but just not that one, no biggy though, still loved the mix...
I had two or three Mark Knight remixes and collaborations in the GU mixes, so if you like what you heard I can send you a tracklist so you can review the sounds he provides (MK standouts are the last track on the first disc, and the epic main-room trance track which comes in around the 40-45 mins mark on Disc 2 - that one's called "Arena")

Certainly is worthy of more comments, there are some areas in this mix where I would have been dancin really hard to the groove - well done indeed! I've noticed a lack of comments lately, seems everyone has time to download and contribute but not to comment....

What a journey my friend!

What a journey my friend! The first three quarters plus of this had the perfect blend of bouncy, driving, slightly dark and more melodic prog. The transitions were sweet all the way too. Did you deliberately mix this one in key? It flowed so effortlessly. This would definitely have had me stuck on the dancefloor had I heard this in a club.

For me the only factor getting in the way of 5 stars was the last three or four tracks. Not that there was anything wrong with them - personally, I just don't go for that uplifting, sickly sweet, female vocal laden type prog. I don't mind female vocals every now and then along with happy, uplifting melodies but only when used sparingly and to accentuate the contrast to the tougher more driving aspects of the track.

The last few songs flowed and were mixed just as well as the rest of the set and I think in the last four to five months your mixing has gone from strength to strength. Good luck with the rest of the DJ tournament and your upcoming gig that you are promoting. If you are mixing like you are on any of your mixes from the last few months you will smash it!

As always thanks for your comments Q - helpful and definitely encourgaing.

I'm glad you liked most of the set.

If I could ask though... apart from the track by Moony, which is obviously the one you're referring to in terms of sickly sweet vocal laden prog, which of the other tunes didn't you like? I'm guessing probably the Sonique track (no vocals though)... maybe deadmau5?... and perhaps Piano 99.... but surely the Micah track (Come From) wasn't too sickly sweet?! Eye-wink I feel that one's epic!

With regards to mixing in key, I've been trying to focus more recently on better blending so thanks for noticing. I don't use software to establish keys, only my ears.

Again, glad you liked it mate, it was a pleasure to perform - wish you could be here for the competition and the club night! Maybe some other time. And thanks so much for the support.

Cheers
Luke

Maybe I just painted the last 3 or 4 tracks with the same brush and maybe a little unfairly. However even though they all may not have had excessive female vocals in them, for me they kind of had the same feel. I totally get trying to wrap up an epic set with something a little sentimental. Its just my personal preference would be something less ... happy or joyous? Maybe melancholic is the word I'm after. Like I said its just my personal preference which really is all any of us can critique against.

Once again good luck with upcoming events and please do keep us all posted with how you go at both.

Even some photos would be good too!

I just noticed you've

I just noticed you've uploaded a remix... must have a listen to that.

Once again, thanks Str80. I definitely enjoy mixing prog house the most... but even moreso combining it with techno (usually the dark, sinister variety) to bring some diversity to the structure of my mixes.

I'm actually competing in the final stage of an Underground DJ competition on Sunday the 21st Feb, and the set I'm working on is just that... it starts with a hybrid of prog house and techno (Kohmha); moves into a tribal, fucky sort of techno (inc Kaiserdisco), reaches a peack with a couple of prog house tracks (inc a teasing remix of 1998 by Pacific Wave); back to dark, banging techno (inc Umek and Marco Bailey); and finishes where it began with a hybrid of tech/prog (inc Jerome Isma-Ae at this stage but I'm undecided whether to end that way).

The competition is to find a modern Underground style and for the DJ to play a residency at this club. We're being encouraged to keep it dark, dirty and techy with elements of prog.

Any advice you (or anyone else) might have Str80 would be fantastic...? I've got a one hour set to prepare for the final.

Wish me luck

Luke
