Ok So I lied about DecAdance 08 being my last mix.. Shocked I had lost my mojo for some time Sad and was at the frustrating block point. Anyway I went to a christmas bash with some friends, just intending to drink.. I ended up getting a lift back to my place to grab my apc and mac and this is what eventuated, It is kind of Adlib/ programmed. The planned parts are I knew which tracks were going to go where and i just went for it. It is the more driving, darker sound that I play as opposed to the lighter cruisy style sets that you have become used to. There is nothing too fancy in the way of effects in this one as I am still on my L plates with the APC..
I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed playing it.
Note this IS the final one for this year as I am off on Thursday..

It's always a sweet sounding ride with you fishn - never abrupt or too raw, just clean and serene... And i always find really special moments in your mixes (a result of your superb track selection, planning, and delivery!)

I thank you once again for delivering this aural pleasure!

Thanks J-C for listening..

Thanks J-C for listening.. Im hoping my mixes arent becoming to sterile and predictable, I just like a certain sound and vibe and see how far i can push it before switching off in another direction...
It will be a shame to see you move on and not be able to put up anymore mixes as someone of your qualities contributes alot to a site like this, not to mention you seem to be a jolly good chap as well.. Smiling

Hey Fishn,
I listened to this mix again today and really enjoyed it again - however if I may provide you with some comments solely related to your continual improvement (directly referring to your above comment) I hope the following may provide an additional focus and/or variation for the construction of your future contributions...

Let me say that I love the way you blend different music styles together, I think you demonstrate pure class, especially in your musicianship - whatever you do don't change that... But what I'd love to see you do is perhaps incorporate a genre which sits outside your standard -I have heard you do this on occassion with breaks, and from the comments I've read this variation has been extermely well received. So why not try and incorporate perhaps a "section" where you delve deep enough into another genre that you almost slightly lose the tech vibe. By all means I reckon you should continue back on to the tech sounds once you are completing this kind of "section"... (ps - I hope this does not mean that you have to change your overall approach to musicianship)

For example in this mix, I loved the deep darker beginning, and I love the peaking track which comes in at around 30 mins - but one thing that I seemed to "want" (which I felt the first time I listened to this) was that around the 44mins there is a terrific breakdown you achieve which has a certain tribal element to it - at this point the mix lifts back up into a more atmospheric techno vibe, but how about delving into some tribal percussive bliss, giving this mix a certain element which these days is rarely found - Again I don't feel creating a whole tribal mix is what I'm saying either, but certainly I believe your mixes have the capacity to really take the listener on an electronic music journey they won't forget... Not sure if this is making sense, but let me know if you think such a suggestion is worth a try?

And by all means look at other genres too - grime/dubstep, breaks and others i'm sure you could get deep into (just as a change up)?

Hey Fish'n, Once again you

Hey Fish'n,

Once again you have successfully delivered the goods.

What a great intro! It had me thinking, anticipating, pondering, and wandering (mentally) - and set the tone for the whole mix. And as a classic example of how well you sew everything together, I recognised the James Teej track when you brought it in - but upon rescanning the tracklist, was surprised that it was the 5th track in (i.e. I thought it was maybe the 3rd ...)!! A credit to your programming skills, indeed.

I thought that this was a bit more on the melodic side of things than your other mixes - by that I mean it was a bit more ethereal and 'lighter' in overtones than some of your other sets. The thing that struck me, though, was the smoooooooooooothness of the set as a whole. It's like you've given it a living, breathing 'pulse', as opposed to just beats.

It becomes more and more apparent just how much preparation, heart, and soul you put into your sets. I would love to be lost on the dance floor to this, closing my eyes...... losing all sense of time...... swimming away - only realising at the very end that I've been underwater for hours when it only felt like seconds.

Magic.

Thanks MCB for your kind

Thanks MCB for your kind words, and the listen, I do put everything into my sets as I believe you get back what you put in, This is the philosify I try to live by.. Im glad the smoothness came across as I was trying to encapsulate a set as a single distinct sound rather than a mix of 15 individual tracks.. This is something I try with all my sets and as i delve into the more complex side of Ableton its something I hope to bring forth more in my mixes.. Im working on mixing alot more individual clips and parts of tracks rather than full tracks that blend.. This way the listener will have absolutely no idea where things are going which should enhance the experience.
I will include parts of tracks that are familiar , but try to make it all like 1 smooth flowing concept all completely mashed and remixed..
I have had 15 attempts so far and have managed to pull off about 36mins worth before it all goes Pete Tong.. Very frustrating but at the same time rewarding also..
Its like when you have been playing with the decks for the first 3 months and you start t pull off some magic, thats the feeling Im getting when trying to do more Live Live sets... by not using complete tracks.. For example, In my Live sets so far, I have had maybe 15-20 tracks in an hour of which Ill place various effects loops etc over them to weave them into one sound.. What I am tring to do now is to utilize maybe 30 or 40 parts of tracks that I like to create a whole new sound for both the tracks and for more of a live sound with what I am doing.. Hope this makes sense..

I am also working on a more down tempo sunday session style mix with alot of ambient beats and sounds, a back to nature mix if you will..

Fishn, I've listened to this

Fishn,

I've listened to this set about 2 or 3 times now and each time I've wanted to listen just once more before commenting (sorry it's taken me an inexcusable period of time to say what I'm about to say, but I just enjoyed this so much and kept discovering new facets to the mix that I wanted to mention)...

I've said this before about your mixes but it needs to be said again... the flow, the overall vibe and structure of the mix is flawless. The title of this set really does do the quality of the production justice in that it is truly an A to B journey (overused term but for lack of a better one..). You took me from something very dark and unsettled to a much higher place and the way you've done it is expert.

I love your track selection and found myself looking less and less at the tracklist because I can tell you've chosen them for their 'fit' and how they fulfil your criteria... not because they're a big name production or well-known tune... or even all that recent!

Like McB said (and very WELL said, I must admit)... you've been able to fit so much into only an hour yet it all just makes sense!

I love the fact that you're continually challenging (and pushing) yourself to discover new ways of mixing, and this makes what you do more of a production than mixing.

I'm genuinely inspired bv what you do and, as you know I was initially very skeptical about software mixing. It appears to me now, though, that your use of Ableton has a virtually limitless scope for creativity and discovery. Listening to what you put together (and the fact that your taste in music is so similar to my own also helps) makes me want to keep mixing and brings so much depth into what I had always thought was just a bit of time wasting... now I consider it passion-play! Or something...

A lot of respect to you Fishn for this mix - you've brought it, as usual, and I can't wait for the next one.

Would be stoked to get the chance to mix with you one day, or just to have a beer and talk about this stuff. Smiling

Have a great weekend coming up mate.

Peace
Luke

Smiling Jawdropping! Wow Thanks Luke, Thats a huge wrap.. Im glad you get the production mix now, which is a great way to describe what I do.. Im glad I inspire you as I draw inspiration from yourself as well as others from here.. I would love to hook up chew the fat have some brewskies and drop some tunes and that may well happen in the future.. Dont put me on a pedastal though as i dont wish to disappoint, Im just a guy who is married living in the burbs and loves fishing as well as quality tunes and productions..
I think with mixes or anything you do you should always puty everything into it otherwise what is the point..
I consider mixing like story telling, and that the more colourful and descriptive you make it, the more people will understand what message or journey you are trying to convey... Ohh thats a bit deep for a Thursday....
Glad you enjoyed this one Mate Eye-wink

Top notch once again mate. You just keep refining your signature sound more and more. I could have picked this as yours just from listening alone.

I don't feel your mixes are becoming sterile. Your Decadance one maybe a little so, but that was over one year old now. I do however agree wholeheartedly with JC's advice. Especially on the tribal tip. Tribal can add so much to any genre of music. It seems to have such universal appeal - probably because it is so primal by nature perhaps.

In your Decadence mix, I wrote something along the lines of it being a little too smooth and atmospheric for my liking. I felt you struck a perfect balance between atmosphere and some solid bottom end badness to keep peeps glued to the dancefloor.

Well done mate.
