So this is my first live mix with my APC40 and Ableton Live 8. Its quite basic for a software mix, just getting to know my new piece of hardware - played with some layering of loops with 2-3 decks throughout - nothing too fancy just yet. Hopefully my next mix takes advantage of all the new features at my disposal. It is actually a lot more involved than all you vinyl purists would like to think - don't knock it till you try it!

Well Qtek, Welcome to the dark side Mwa ha ha ha...
, Did you do that yourself?? I had this on out the back whilst constructing a shed and the neighbours want a copy as well.. It played 3 times and each time there were subtle little sounds coming out. Track 8 was mixed in brilliantly and almost had a tribal feel to it with the sounds you had going on..
You have done a terrific job with this mix mate, the thing that stood out for me is that you didnt over do it anywhere, It sounds strange but sometimes with Ableton it is really easy to have too much going on as you have access to so much. The construction and flow of the set were top shelf, your track selection superb, It definately had the minimal aspect going with some really nice tech in there as well.. The intro was really cool
Highly recommended for audio pleasure..

Wow Fishn, you're too kind! Receiving that kind of kudos from you really does mean a lot. I put a fair bit of thought into this one so its great to know its appreciated by those who know.
Yeah I know its easy to over cook it so I was conscious just to keep it relatively simple for my first one. No need to be complex just for the sake of it I suppose. The intro is a combination of two different dj tools that I bought from Beatport. I think it makes a set feel just a little more polished when it has a decent intro. I want to make my own intro from scratch for my next set, maybe containing a twisted vocal sample from somewhere too. Nice little bonus that your neighbour dug it too!

Hey Que, great mix mate. The tribal beats through the middle were definately a stand out bit for me. I also really got the impression throughout the mix that there was more going on then just straight mixing from track to track. Some great sounds. I've got a mate that purposely went out to buy a random tech house CD the other day and was really dissapointed when he got home and had a listen......i've passed on the link for this mix as I'm sure he'll dig it.

If a darker shade of grey had a sound, then this would be it... Kind of works listening to it on this website! Go the tribal!

Brilliant mix dude, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It flowed and built so smoothly. The last half was my favourite but that was because you built to that point so professionally. Cant wait to see what else you can do with your APC40.
Such class.

Glad you enjoyed it Str80! Yeah next APC mix should be at another level hopefully. Only just scratching the surface in terms of what is possible. I'm learning new things about the APC and Ableton each day. You're really only limited by your own creativity.
PS - Great to see yourself and Sam back on here! I'll check out you're latest shortly.

Glad to be back dude. It looks like a really cool and intersting peice of kit, and its a controller that im considering when i go digital in the near future. I think that the digital craze is really exciting at the moment and i want to be part of it.

Yeah mate, definitely exciting times with what is available now, and its really not that expensive either. I bought my APC from www.sweetwater.com on advice from Mike Indigo. They are based in the US but even after delivery I still saved about $400 so don't buy one until you check them out. I highly recommend this piece of kit with Ableton Live 8.

This is why i dont like it, to much pissing around, i love just being able to throw whatever into the mix whenever.
Anyway enough of my luddite ways, this mix is farkin great Q!
Great feel and flow and super sold, the tribal rolling feel from around 20 on is mint.
It should be 4.5 from me but there are no half stars, so because of my preference for mixes done on the one's and two's i'll have to go back to 4.
I know there is a 5 coming soon though.
Oh yeah looks like you'll have to change your profile pic seeing you don't use that vintage gear anymore

Thanks for the listen Baax.
Yes there is a lot of pissing around but the potential to do so much more with the performance of music is exciting to me. For a while now I have become bored of just mixing 2 tracks together in the the tried and tested way. Yes I know there is 3 deck mixing and that is something I always did want to master but could never justify spending the money required for a 3rd deck. Since I've gone to Ableton I now have 8 decks at my disposal and the potential to be evermore creative then just - 'playing a track, waiting for the breakdown to finish, waiting for a few bars, begin mixing in next track increasing the volume incrementally each bar and lowering volume on outgoing track until mix is complete. Cue next track and repeat process'.
Don't get me wrong, mixing 2 tracks together in a heaving club that is feeling your vibe is unbeatable and I will never forget my roots. I will always have tradtional mixing as a skill that I am proud of and it will always have a place in clubland, its just that there really is so much more that can be achieved with technology.
Glad you liked the tribal section - it seems to have been a hit!
I will check your latest production effort shortly.

No probs mate, i can tell you will embrace it fully and get the most out of it and i look foward to hearing the future results!
Id love to hear you work it as much as someone like Surgeon.
Im in an interesting place at the moment, the only music im buying is old vinyl off ebay and the only thing im useing Ableton for is my first shaky attempts at production.
My next buy will be an Xstation 49 which (i dont think) can be used for dj'ing, so i'll leave the mixing to guy's like you and fishn and i'll do my best to pump out something half decent, although that may take sometime

Sensational Q. Really loved the theme of this set: very dark, very energetic but minimal. And I loved the hint of tribal throughout some of the tracks. Some of the vocals were impressive too - particularly the slowed-down, low, reverbed, 'monstrous' samples.
You've really been able to select tracks that not only progress really well but also adhere to the chosen genre to a 't'. I really appreciate that about mixes - a DJ that can take you from one place to another on the floor (or in your bedroom listening on your laptop!) without jumping around from genre to genre shows real talent.
I'm sure the Prognosis club nights have a lot to gain from your work. Keep it up - clearly impressive use of technology as well (well-selected title for the mix mate).
Unfortunately the last 10 mins or so was silent for me... but I could tell where it was going. The second half of the set was, for me, dramatically more active and uplifting than the first. Which I really love.
Nothing to criticise Q... I did feel that some of the mixes early on dragged a little bit, but that really only gave me the sense that you were starting slow and building it up. Good stuff. Oh and the beatmixing was flawless.
Respect! 5 stars! (and not because I think it'll give me more of a chance of playing at Prognosis...)

Obrigato! (Thats Tetum for thanks)
Always like to hear what you have to say about anyone's mix Luke. Yes the tribal elements have been a hit with everyone so far and I always like to throw in a splash of tribal into a mix no matter what the predominant genre may be. There is something primal about it that just makes you move.
What do you mean by the last 10 mins being 'silent' - you mean literally no sound? Not sure why, no one else has said anything about this. Shame because it had a nice finish to it.
Yes your right about some of the mixes dragging on a little. I guess its just something I'll have to perfect. Its easy to get lost in the groove of an endless loop and become somewhat hypnotised by it!
I'm head down in trying to arrange the track I'm currently working on. But once I find time I will review your mix.
pointed out
Hey dude thought I might give something different a listen for a change cos it's about fucking time
I pressed play expecting to press stop a few minutes later but that didn't happen, the reason being that I didn't want to!
So I figure it comes down to planning of the set and the smooth mixing of the set and of course track selection, this style not normally
my bag but I actually quite enjoyed most of the tracks although there were a few parts where it just seemed like a minimal beat going
for about 10 minutes! but anyway this actually helped while I was studying, I guess I found it relaxing haha.
Track highlight for me would be that Space Dance track by Danny Tenaglia, nice one
Also really enjoyed some of the sounds toward the end of the mix, mainly the last half hour I guess.
Cool mix dude

I guess this means I'll have to do the same and check out one of your mixes soon - once my download speed is back up again!
I've been a little quiet on here in the last few weeks, mainly because it takes too damn long to download stuff. It should hopefully reset over the weekend.

Q I know it took me a long time to comment but I have listened to this mix many times and each and every time I listen to it I'm convinced this is your best mix to date. I kept being reminded of the first mix of yours that I listened to that was thickly laden with tribal "party" tech, not my preferred choice, and in this mix the tribal element is present but blended with a solid bedrock of throbbing minimalism dropping the "party party" vibe in place of a more mature and modern feel. The tribal seems to be your strong point and now you seem to have journeyed through minimalism and other tech styles and been able to hand pick the best bits along the way and incorporate them into your own style. Track selection and mixing are bang on.
Still waiting to hear your production Q? Get cracking man.
Peace in the middle east.............. Rhys.

Thanks for bringing this one
Thanks for bringing this one back to life - i thought it was well and truly dead and buried.
Insightful analysis. I appreciate that you have noticed the evolution of my sound. I still don't mind that 'party' sound but only if I'm in the mood and it suits the occasion.
As for my production efforts? I kind of hit a rut with that one and rather than finish it off its just gathering dust so to speak. I guess after your comments and hearing Sam's impressive first offering I'd better get cracking on that one!
Many thanks Rhys.
PS - Have you made any alterations to 'Sunbell'? If so I'd love to hear what you've done with it.
