Tension
Hey guys haven't been able to contribute to this site as much as i would have liked over the last month as ive been away with work, but here is a mix that i started work on before i went away.
It contains tracks from the likes of ramon tapia, dubfire, audiojack, popof etc. Im more than happy to pm you on a tracklist if you would like one. Its a bit darker and more driving than my recent mixes and is more focused on the peaktime.
Hope you all enjoy and don't be afraid to tell us what you think!!

Hey str80,
Good to see you back! Even better to hear you back
Once again you have set the bar higher for the rest of us.
Indeed this was a more driving mix than we've become accustomed too, and I would say that if 'peaktime' was your intended target, then you've hit the bullseye. The energy you create with this mix is relentless, and I can't imagine a dance floor would be anything less than packed.
I have to say I personally liked the first 1/3 - 1/2 the best. Some of those nice dark minimal sounds coupled with those wobbly bass lines that make your eyes water are a real treat. You've a great ear for the techno, and all these tracks were kwality in themselves.
No probs with anything technical from me. Levels were pretty mint. Mixing was tight and tidy. You just keep getting better and better.
Look forward to more (did I read somewhere else that you're planning to get into Live?? - That should be a bit of fun!)
Cheers,
Matt

Glad you liked it dude and many thanks for all the wonderful complements, much appreciated. Yeah looking to go digital when i can get enough cash together, im thinking either the APC40 and ableton (mainly because qteks mix was so brilliant) or go all richie hawtin and get 2 xone 1ds and traktor pro because ive seen some stuff on youtube that has made me salivate and i want to be able to gig with whatever i end up getting. Leaning towards the 1ds as i can still use them with ableton, their retatively compact and they're at mixer height.
Cheers again man

hey str80180, You have definately pulled off one of the best peak time sets I have heard for some time.. It built really well and the first 2 tracks set the scene for something special.. I cant say much else other than 5 stars from me.. Brilliant.
Go Ableton with the APC, I just got the APC and it is amazing..

Thanks Fishn for the awesome wrap, much appreciated. The APC looks pretty suave and ableton does have the most creative possibilites but im still undecided. How often to you use more than 4 channels in ableton? What is navigation like with the APC do you still need to use you mouse and keyboard? i like the fact that the 1ds dont need that much space to set up in a club or anywhere with a mixer for that matter and you can control all of traktors functions from the unit and im sort of swaying towards getting an APC and a keyboard later down the track for production but you guys are making me think i should try to kill 2 birds with one stone.
Thanks again man

The beauty of Live is that
The beauty of Live is that it can be used for straight 2 deck mixing, 8 deck mixing (if this is possible!), Live performance (for ANY genre of music) and studio production. I've never used Traktor myself, but from what I understand its only for djing, not production. Yes you're right in saying that its not often that you would need more than 4 decks but once you master 3 and 4 deck mixing you can use your creativity with the other channels to use kick loops, hi hat loops, synth loops, random real world sounds that you have sampled yourself. Obviously it would take a lot of patience and commitment to get to that level but those are just some of the possibilities.
Navigation is pretty good too. I find myself using the mouse occasionally but that is largely due to my own inexperience. Also, you can remap the controls of the APC to suit your own style. You can have a template to suit live performance and a template for studio work. You can create as many templates as you like.
If money isn't a problem then by all means buy both as I'm sure Traktor with its controller would be just as fun and would also allow you to be very creative. If you can't buy both then like you said 'kill 2 birds with one stone'.
PS - listening to your mix now and really enjoying it, will rate and review later.

Thanks for sharing bro its a toss up between both but these are pipedreams at the moment as i still need to get a laptop first lol. I can see the sense in getting the APC because you can do much more with it but im still not sure im thinking i want something a little more dj specific just for the moment.

Well I know there are always budget constraints but before you buy a laptop give some serious consideration to a Macbook Pro. I've read all the PC vs Mac debates on this and other sites and finally decided to take the plunge about 4 months ago and haven't looked back. Honestly, its like going from driving a Datsun to a Rolls Royce. Just about anyone serious about their music has one.

With regards to your digital
With regards to your digital cross over plans I can offer you a few bits of guidence as I have DJ'ed and travelled with records and laptop and all the bits and bobs that go along with it. My thoughts concerning Traktor vs Live is that ,it should be dictated by your style and feel in mixing live. Both are capable of layering, FX and automatically syncing only Live offers very little in the way of manual interaction other than with the mixer or Midi controller and you loose some of the tricks you might have available from vinyl, CD's or a Traktor set up. Personally I do occassionaly miss that interaction and am considering adding Traktor for that touch and feel element. What you loose with Live is more than compesated for by what you gain though. Contrary to popular opinion it doesn't do the work for you and can take an amazing amount of effort to become proficient with in a live context depending on how far you want to push things. If you can afford both get both. If you are wanting to venture into production you can't get better than Live for making the entry level fun and accessable. In no time you can be knocking out beats , loops and sounds.
With regards to the A&H Xone 1 over the APC40, the Xone is much more portable and a highly workable piece of kit. It's usefull in production too but limited compared to the APC40. If your going to be gigging the Xone is by far the winner. Again if you can afford both, get them you wont be dissapointed. A friend has an A&H Xone4D and everychance I get I'm banging away on that thing. I'm going to see if he'll give me enough tme alone with it to knock up a big digital and vinyl set soon.

Hi str80180, Firstly the
Hi str80180, Firstly the wrap is deserved .
In regards to Abes, I always have 8 channels linked up at a live set, especially now for the APc. What I generally will do is use maybe 5, but I will have tracks loaded up in the other 3 as well as various different loops etc. I have my tracks pre loaded, so on a gig i will have access to 240 odd tracks which I can launch at the touch of a button. Doing this allows me to not have to use a keyboard or mouse at all as the Apc takes care of all transport options.. I still have to read the crowd etc to know which track to launch at what time, ie live playing, but I can actually duplicate the track and use which sections of the track I want and leave out the rest. This is great for creating new sounding tunes that still run melodies from peoples faves. I have just purchased Operator which is an Ableton Instrument and is very good fro creating all sorts of sounds through a single or multiple middi channels. My idea for this is to actually utilize this in a live set along with Sampler to try a do remixes on the fly.. I need to hone my production skills however to make this happen efficiently, but this is where Ableton comes into its own. I used traktor in about 2005/06 which i borrowed from a friend. The trouble I found was it was still very limiting in what you could do, yes you could play 4 decks but I wanted to go down a different path where there was endless possibilities. For me Traktor was too much like having 4 decks be it cdjs or sl1200s. Aleton has just got that much more going for it, even if I havent used it yet

Would this mean I have to
Would this mean I have to film my Filing cabinet and abacus as well, oh there is a stapler and a punch, I might even get the photocopier in as well
.
More seriously, I would be happy to do this, it my give the naysayers something to think about... Ill get some shots done up in the mean time, then I will get a friend to film what actually happens when playing live live.. Ill mainly do the screen and Apc as well as a quick scroll up to see me but mainly on what is happening with the gear. At no point do I profess to be a guru, expert or any other "pro style" dj. i have just embraced technology after moving away from decks, and now I do practise a fair bit. I suppose the main thing that may help towards the sound I achieve is just the dedication and experience gained from using decks previously.. As you know Rhys, the medium dont matter, its what you feel comfortable with and seeing as I do not play anywhere other than parties these days, it beats the heck out of lugging vinyl around..
I must go now, I have a doctors appointment to look at my wrist, It seems I have been checking too many emails and have developed rsi.

Thanks guys for sharing, you are both definately swaying my thoughts on the matter. Its starting to make much more sense to go with the APC and live 8. The way im seeing it now is that their really isnt much point in going to traktor when ive already got cdjs, and tell the truth of all my experience with dj specific software (such as traktor, virtual dj etc) ive always prefered just going back manually to cds. And with production being another item on the to do list it seems pretty stupid to spend the money twice. So thanks for the advice and i hope you guys dont think i was talking ableton down (god knows the mixes that both of you guys post should be testiments), but its way better to get opinions from people with experience than to dive head first without much knowledge. And yeah im strongly leaning towards the macbook pro in the way of a laptop. One thing i have learned from djing and just life in general is your better of getting the best gear to start if you are really serious because it works out cheaper in the long run, because in a years time when your looking for more possibilites you don't have to spend up again.
had a thought
Str8, as an avid admirer of your mixes I was well pleased to see you with a fresh posting and downloaded it imedietly. Everything that has been said in previous posts has been right and the mix is of the finest quality with mixing style, track selection, programing and levels being spot on ( did think it might have been recorded overall slightly too low, as I had to turn it up but that's by the by). Your mission , to build a peak time focused set , achieved.
My only gripe, and this is simply because you do set the bar very high for yourself with previous contributions, my gripe is that I found it to perhaps be too focused if you will allow me that. I'm all for sticking with a plan and your execution is flawless, it's just at a lick over 60 mins I felt their was a few more mixes in you to complete the journey I've grown accustomed to with your mixes. I'm not suggesting breaking out of the driving techno, fuck knows that's not what I'm suggesting. What I'm putting out there is the notion that as an hour of mixing this is first class, as a slice of dancefloor action it would have people rampant with electronic fits cutting up some serious rug, as a demonstration of your skills it's formidible, it's just I wanted more, at least the old 76 mins a regulation CD mix used to give us. I think with those few extra mixes you could have just taken us all somewhere else ( not because I didn't love where it went, I'm just a greedy bastard). As I said it's only because you set the bar so high I expect so much from you. For most others this could be a six star mix and I feel a little strange giving it 4 but I hope everyone understands what I mean. I'm sure your going to rake in more than enough coin to tide you over a few mixes after this one but if you ever short hit me up as this would be 5 under normal circumstances I just feel I have to be honest.

Its cool man, im not to worried about ratings, just happy to that people enjoy the sounds that i feel so passionate about. Ill make the next one fill a cd for all you greedy barstards
I wouldnt mind posting an hour and a half to a 2 hour mix where i could really mix up and some different genres and sounds but i feel that most people dont get the time to absorb such a thing with all their other 'real world' commitments cause i know i find it hard. Let us know though if you want one, because im more than happy to give it a shot.
announced
Yeah I didn't think you
Yeah I didn't think you would be too concerned about star ratings just felt I had to justify my reasoning. A 2 hour mix is exactly why I was hinting towards. CD length is all good but I like to loose myself in a mix and sometimes magic takes some time to happen, building , holding , releasing, teasing.( Ha, I sound like a gay size queen! ) It's a different skill and one Ive seen failed by many well recognized highly paid DJ's but I have faith you'll deliver. Hell go for longer if you feeling it. What's the limit on here?

Contrary to rhys comment, I felt like I entered the club halfway through your 2 hour set - If this was tension, then I'd love to hear what possessed you to get to this point... Terrific progression right through to the last dark crescendo you left us all with!
Track 4 was a standout (I think I heard it on another recent dj mix on this site - yours or ryanjs maybe??)

I think you may have
I think you may have misunderstood my comments JC, I wholly agree with the sentiment of feeling as though you'd entered the club at the midway point of the set and that the progression was spot on, I just wish I was there for the first half or there was an encore. As I said, in a live context this would have blown me away ( sort of does anyway ) it just left me wanting more in a good and a not so good way.

Cheers for listening JC glad that you enjoyed it. Tracks 4 is called Get up Jude by Fiord and its the D-nox and Beckers remix and yes it did get a jersey in my last mix. Brilliant track, highly recommended.

Top shelf techno once again Str80! The opening 2 tracks were the highlight for me, such sinister undertones - I love it! I also really liked the haunting feeling I got from the closing track - tech with emotion - Nice!
Everything in between was mixed sublimely and progressed beautifully as always. There was one track (4th one in I think) which didn't really do a great deal for me as it seemed to plod along a little. I've heard this one a few times and it seems to be popular but its not for me. This however was not enough to detract from 5 stars.
I have to agree with Rhys and JC about the feeling of walking in half way through a peaktime set and wanting to hear the first half as well (though I can't complain as my last mix was only 60 mins too).
Maybe your next mix could be a prequel to this one?
That I'd like to hear!

Thanks Krabe and Q-tek for the ears and the such nice comments, glad you both enjoyed it so much. The tune at the 48 minute mark is Shades by Popof and i got it off beatport, love that tune. And maybe a 'Pre-Tense' is now in order...
