About A-Tek
(aka AARON 1/ THE TECHNOLOGIST/ THE FREAK!) Hailing from the central Victorian goldmining town of Bendigo, now currently residing in what was once called "TECHNO CITY"--MELBOURNE. Before moving to Melbourne A-Tek was an integral part of the Bendigo dance community, where self taught, through the influnce of many, he devoloped his dj'ing skills. Getting his first break as a passionate young radio jock through a good friend and mentor , later joining forces to bring Bendigo some of its first underground style parties with the likes of dj Simon Slieker and live act Frontside. Moving on through many guest appearances at clubs, bars, raves and outdoor parties in the local area and culminating into a weekly 5hr residency. A-Tek has been spinning across various formats and various genre for the past 13 years. When asked, what influnced his musical taste and desire to become a dj?: From as early as I can remember I have been into music of some form or another. As a child I grew up watching tv shows like "countdown" and buging my parents to play their records on this portable turntable my day had at the time. My love of electronic music I believe comes from my fascination with sci-fi , I can remember as I was growing up always liking music that had a good rythmn or beat and then the first techno music started to get played and I was so amazed and captivated at all the little weird sounds and the constant hypnotic bass beat. Dj'ing came as a continuation of these influnces. As I became more aware of the culture that surrounded the music, it gave me a voice and a meaning as a (teenager begining the search for who you are and where you fit in the world) I was a shy person and dj'ing allowed me to show who I was on a different level. At the turn of century it seemed techno, as a genre, ruled the Melbourne and quite a majority of the international scene, what are your thoughts or comments on this and where we're headed? Ah,I have many good memories of that era, at the time it seemed like you could go to any club or party and you were going to be treated to quality music and a quality event places like the ledgendary shed 14 and the docks and clubs like Filter and Teriaki'. Then round 99'- 2000' people started to leave the scene for other genres such as progressive and hard nrg/house/trance. As to why this happened I'm not exactly shure, maybe techno had run it course for time, maybe the newer party goers didn't get where techno was coming from but there was this collective shift as a whole away from the techno scene. At the moment the Melbourne scene is in a growing stage with lots of local crews putting on events and parties, the scence is now split into more diverse groups catering to there specific target audiences. Things like the minimal sound coming from germany and europe are gaining popularity as demand from audience increases, electro(no house added to that ED)/electro-tech are still popular and straight up techno all still have there followings. Current favourites that I would recomend at the moment would be the MTC and Technoir crewsand Pretty Simple @ F4. In reguards to the Melbourne scene and how important it ties with the international scene or is recognised by the international scene I believe that there is some work to do to get Melbourne, as far as techno goes, back to the status it was once held. Having said that though I would like to say the future is looking positve as I have noticed a shift away from some of the other genres of electronic music back into the techno scene and hope this a trend that continues. Ok enough of politics what type of sounds might we hear from A-Tek? That would depend on the vibe from the crowd or the venue or even set length, currently though it may be across the range from minimal -> electro-> tech/acid house-> tribal-> funky->hard techno with the occasional industrial or scranz track. I think that pretty much covers it.(Interview with complement c/o AYRIES)
